CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN MUSIC? HOW DO YOU STAY INVOLVED WITH IT TODAY?
My background in music started at an early age. I studied and played woodwind all through school. Being a baby boomer, I grew up listening to 45s and LPs from bands like The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, New Wave and Punk, and the list goes on. It was important to pass that onto my son and daughter, so they’d have an appreciation for it all. They in turn kept my tastes current as I watched them develop tastes of their own. Concert attendance was huge as well – from Dixie Chicks with my daughter Hannah and U2 and DMB with my son. Music is a huge part of my life. I no longer play an instrument, but I appreciate all forms of music. It’s always on whether I’m driving or at home.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF MICHAEL GENNIS?
Taking care of my dogs Clive (a Golden) and Zoey (a terrier), catching up on emails, following up with clients and listings, and enjoying great food. I’m a pretty decent cook, and if I can find the time, TV and/or movies. I also am the Ottawa fundraising lead for CANFAR (the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research). It all weaves into my day.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN REAL ESTATE? CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS APPROACH?
After a career in the tech sector and a brief second career running my own art gallery, I set my sights on a career in real estate. For me, this is simply ‘doing what comes naturally’. I grew up immersed in real estate trading – my late father was a top agent in the 59s, 60s and 70s. He sold real estate for some of Ottawa’s then top builders/developers – Bill Teron, JP Chenier, Robert Campeau, and Bernard Garand. With regard to trading within my own portfolio, I have demonstrated a natural sense for investment value, neighborhood fit and good design. These skills, combined with a positive, helpful, and outgoing nature, have always served me well.
By business approach is client focused and using my business and negotiating skills to ensure they are represented fairly and leave them feeling like they’ve had a highly positive experience. I go that extra mile. ALWAYS. My commitment to clients is founded on honesty, integrity and of course, the best possible service.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FITTING IN WITH THE BLUE PANDA BRAND?
I’ve always stayed current in terms of lifestyle and marketing trends. I make it a point to learn from colleagues and take from them what I need to enhance my world view. I am big on team approaches to developing business strategy, decision-making, and problem solving.
In addition, I have always been fascinated by, and demonstrated a keen eye for, residential design and decor. My interest in residential design is a huge bonus for my clients and I enjoy helping them visualize their new homes.
I think my talents in business development, marketing and customer relationships will serve me well at Blue Panda.
